Khor Virap Monastery
Every Armenian has heard above this unique architectural monument, which nowadays has become one of the main attractions of Ararat. This fortified monastery is the place of pilgrimage and one of the most worshipped ones in Armenia and the holy site for the Armenian Apostolic Church . He monastery was erected in the 6 th – 17 th centuries above the dungeon where St. Gregory the Illuminator, the Baptist of Armenia, had been kept for the disseminating of Christianity until tsar Trdat decided to adopt this religion. The dungeon where the holy elder was tortured used to be the tsar’s dungeon (“Khor Virap” – “deep pit”). The pit swarming with poisonous snakes and scorpions served as a prison. According to the legend St. Gregory the Illuminator stayed in that pit for 13 years.
Noravank Monastery
Noravank means “New Monastery” in Armenian. However, today this name does not match as it is already more than seven centuries old. The most beautiful Noravank complex was constructed in the 13 th century on the ledge of narrow winding gorge of the river Arpa near the city of Yeghegnadzor. The gorge is famous for its steep red rocks towering behind the monastery. The most ancient structure of the monastery is the ruined Surb Karapet church (St. Karapet) constructed in the 9 th – 10 th centuries. In 1216-1223 the main temple of the monastery was built and named Surb Karapet. The temple is distinguished by strict decorative ornamentation. Inside it are deep niches with khachkars. Noravank complex thanks to its magnificent medieval architecture and beautiful landscape looks very impressive.
Tatev Monastery
The jewel of medieval Armenian architecture, Tatev, was constructed in the 9 th – 13 th centuries. The access to it is very complicated due to the terrain features. Nevertheless, the true lovers of unique ancient monuments do find ways to visit this masterpiece of medieval architecture. Visit to medieval Tatev monastery on the longest ropeway in the world “Wings of Tatev”(5,7 km). “Wings of Tatev” reversible ropeway was constructed within the framework of “Tatev Revival” project.
